Was it a stroke of luck?

“You’re lucky.” It’s a phrase I’ve heard often since my stroke—lucky to have my sight, lucky to have avoided more severe deficits, and lucky to be here.

I don’t feel lucky about what happened. But I do feel grounded in gratitude for the path of healing I’m on, for the people walking beside me, and for the ways this experience continues to shape how I see myself and the world.

This blog is where I make sense of that journey in real time—through story, reflection, and the quiet work of rebuilding.

Week 1: The Power of Resilience

I am certain I'd heard the term resilience, but i don't think I ever thought about myself as resilient despite going through a lot in my life.  Friedrich Nietzsche said, "That which does not kill us makes us stronger."  I used to tell myself this over and over again.  Then one day I kind of found myself a little too hardened with some pretty high walls. In learning about resilience, it's not just about surviving - it's more.  It's standing tall and finding way forward.

In 2007 the Disney film Meet The Robinsons came out. The film ends with a quote that stood out to me.

"Around here, however, we don’t look backwards for very long. We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things, because we're curious … and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths." Walt Disney.

It reiterates the message of not dwelling on failures but instead finding a way forward.  I used to remind myself of this over and over.

Over the years I've developed the strategy to always keep my gaze forward, even if I need to take a beat - the rest is good, but I never look back.
