Stroke Maven

I’m an ischemic stroke survivor, making the most of each day. By sharing my experiences and lessons learned, I hope to inspire and support others on their own healing journeys.

Every Month Is Stroke Awareness Month

Did you know stroke is the 5th leading cause of death in the United States?

Every 3 minutes and 14 seconds, someone in the U.S. dies from a stroke. Over 795,000 people experience a stroke each year, and in 2020, I was one of them.
I launched this blog in March 2022 for Brain Injury Awareness Month as a way to help my healing process, but at the time, I wasn’t quite ready. Now, I feel better prepared to speak up and raise awareness to support other survivors.
On August 8, 2025, it will be 5 years since my stroke. My hope is that this space will continue to be a source of healing for me and, through sharing my journey, help others along the way. Thank you for visiting—I hope something here resonates with you.

Stevie Nicks Gypsy of Walworth

Yup, that's her official registered name with the AKC Canine Partners™ Program—they welcome all mixed-breed dogs. Stevie is a 5-year-old cattle dog corgi mix rescued from Houston, TX, that we've had since March 2021.

We began training Stevie to be my service dog in January 2022. She also works hard at manners and obedience. This past spring, Stevie earned her AKC Canine Good Citizenship and Advanced Canine Good Citizenship titles.  Check out my Dog Days with Stevie Nicks.
My work represents a journey of rebuilding and recalibrating to arrive where I am today.  My work is accessible and inspirational to those in the brain injury community and to all who appreciate the obstacles I showcase through my art.

The first time I heard Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor speak, she reminded a group of brain injury survivors to pay attention to the things we can do today, that we couldn't do yesterday. Celebrating the small wins is key—sometimes, even the tiniest progress can have a bigger impact than we realize. It’s a powerful reminder of how far we've come. Since March 2021, I’ve been documenting the "Things I Can Do Today." Take a moment to reflect on your own journey: What can you do today that you couldn’t do yesterday?
